#WorldAIDSDay: Nurx Launches PrEP Service in Washington, D.C.
By on 01 December 2016
World AIDS Day has been observed every year on December 1 since 1988. On this day, people worldwide unite in the fight against HIV and show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. This year on World AIDS Day, we at Nurx are launching our PrEP service and app in Washington, DC.
According to CDC data, more than one million Americans are living with HIV, and more than 40,000 are newly diagnosed with HIV each year. In the nation’s capital, the estimated rate of HIV diagnoses is 66.9 per every 100,000, which is the highest in the country and more than four times higher than the national average.
Pre-exposure prophylaxis, better known as ‘PrEP,’ is an HIV prevention method in which people who do not have HIV, take a daily pill (Truvada) to reduce their chances of infection. Studies have shown Truvada for PrEP to be up to 99% effective at preventing transmission of the virus. With our app, people can get a prescription for Truvada from one of our doctors, and then have it delivered right to their door.
